Resource Books
- “The Right to Write” by Julia Cameron: One of the first books I read when I began my journey about 5 years ago. She is more known for “The Artist’s Way” but this is the one I found first. I loved the exercises at the end of each chapter.
- “The INFJ Writer” by Lauren Sapala: I identify as INFJ (Myers-Briggs) and this book “got” me. If you identify as INFJ, or even INFP, I highly recommend this resource.
- “The INFJ Revolution” by Lauren Sapala: Ditto for above. This book ‘gets’ me. I felt a lot less weird after reading this.
- “Transforming Your Dragons” by José Stevens, PhD: I recently learned of this book via an online class with Lauren Sapala. It has been both a personal resource as well as one I am using in writing my current novel.
- “The Writer’s Journey” by Christopher Vogler: This is the main book used as a basis for the novel writing series I have been taking. Fabulous. I cannot recommend this one enough for helping develop story structure. This one was a game changer for me.
- “Writing to Awaken” by Mark Matousek – self-guided therapy in book form. This is intense! I am not yet through this one (at this writing, 10/5/2020) I am only 25%. But if I stopped now it would be worth the cost. This has been one of the most insightful, introspective, growth-inducing books I have ever read. Did I mention intense? I recommend taking your time to fully absorb each section, allowing your mind to soak up the lessons.
Fiction ‘Just for fun’ Books I love
These books vary…There is neither rhyme nor reason to many of the books that have grabbed me over the years. Here goes:
- “When Fire Loves Water (Part I)” by J. Suzanne Frank
- “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman
- “Sing, Unburied, Sing” by Jesmyn Ward
- “Jitterbug Perfume” by Tom Robbins
- “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jamie Ford
- “Love and Other Consolation Prizes” by Jamie Ford
- “Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank (one of the most impactful books of my teen years. Has always stuck with me…)
- “The Forgetting Time” by Sharon Guskin
- “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coehlo
- “Dying to be Me” by Anita Morjani (amazing true story of her NDE!!)
- “Outlander (1st book in the series)” by Diana Gabaldon
- Any of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich…fun, beach reads. Light.
- “Crown of Fire” by Lisa King – one of my more recent discoveries!
- “Piranesi” by Susanna Clarke – This was one of those books that builds after you finish reading it. Short but intense!
